Agenda: Seminar on Death Penalty

In partnership with “Together Against Death Penalty”, an NGO, the Advisory Council on Human Rights (CCDH) organises a seminar on the death penalty in October 2008 in Rabat.

The seminar aims to gain deeper insight into the death penalty by inviting the stakeholders concerned at the national level to open a serene debate on the death penalty in connection with several questions: national legislation, human rights, Islamic doctrine, criminology and international standards.

The two-day seminar is supposed to see the participation of several stakeholders, including CCDH members, magistrates, lawyers, members of parliaments, Ulemas (Muslim scholars), academics, media and NGOs representatives.

It is worth mentioning that the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Aiming at the Abolition of the Death Penalty, adopted and proclaimed by the General Assembly in its Resolution 44/128 of 15 December 1989, was signed by seven countries: Andorra, Chile, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, Nicaragua, Poland, Sao Tome and Principe, and ratified by South Africa, Germany, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Cyprus, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Djibouti, El Salvador, Ecuador, Spain, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Norway, New Zealand, Panama, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Great Britain, Seychelles, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia.
