Since 2003, the World Day against the Death Penalty has been celebrated each October 10, following the call of the World Coalition against the Death Penalty. The Coaloition aims to strengthen the international dimension of the fight against the death penalty.

Created in Rome on May 13, 2002, the World Coalition against the Death Penalty is an alliance of more than 120 NGOs, bar associations, local authorities and unions.

The Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) recommended in its final report the gradually abolition of the death penalty.

The former Advisory Council on Human Rights, that was entrusted with the implementation of the IER’s recommendations, initiated debate on capital punishment involving all relevant stakeholders. It organized a seminar on the abolition of death penalty on 11 and 12 October 2008, in partnership with the French association All against the death penalty.
