Sahara Press Award: A training session for journalists on media and human rights

On the sidelines of the 2nd Sahara Press Award a training session on media and human rights was organized by the Regional Human Rights Commission of Laayoune-Smara and the Sahara Press Club in Laayoune on Friday 5 June 2015.

34 media professionals working in the Southern Provinces took part in this training, supervised by a national media and human rights expert, professor at the Rabat-based leading institute of higher education in media and communication (Institut Supérieur de l'Information et de la Communication). They represented audio-visual media (the regional TV station of Laayoune), radio stations (the local radio of Laayoune, the local radio of Dakhla, Radio Mars and MFM Radio), print newspapers (local and regional newspapers and correspondents of national newspapers) and several news websites.

The session approached media and human rights from different perspectives. It focused in particular on women’s rights and discrimination against women, the rights of persons with disabilities and the rights of the child.

The session aimed at helping the participants develop a deep understanding of the related issues and how to better report on human rights issues, in general, and the issues they discussed in the session in particular.

The winners of the 2nd Sahara Press Award will be announced on the final ceremony of the award, to be held in Laayoune tomorrow the 6th of June 2015. The award was initiated last year by CNDH’s regional commission in Laayoune to help journalists understand and endorse human rights principles and values, better report on human rights issues and thus contribute to promoting the human rights culture.
