Egypt: CNDH participates in the congress on the required legislation /mechanisms to fight against torture in Arab countries

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) participated in Cairo, Egypt on 8 and 9 October 2019 in the Congress on the required legislation and mechanisms to fight against torture in Arab countries. This event was organized by the National Council for Human Rights in Egypt.

Abdelhak Eddouk, Head of the Section on protecting the rights of persons in places of deprivation of liberty represented the CNDH at this Congress. He shed lights on the Moroccan process of establishing the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (NPM) which was culminated in the appointment of the CNDH as the NPM.

It should be noted that on 21 September 2019, the CNDH set up its NPM, which will examine the situation and treatment of persons deprived of their liberty by:
- Regular visits and visits whenever requested by the CNDH,
- The elaboration of any recommendation that could improve the treatment and situation of persons deprived of their liberty and prevent torture,
- The submission of any proposal or note on existing legislation /bills or proposals relating to the prevention of torture.
